Finding Calm in the Christmas Season

The Christmas season often carries a mix of warmth, joy, expectation, and—quietly—pressure. While our culture paints this time of year as magical and effortless, many people move through December feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or emotionally heavy. If this season feels complicated for you, you’re not alone. And there is nothing wrong with needing a little extra calm right now.

At Calm Haven Mental Health, we believe that the holiday season should make room for real human experiences—joy, grief, hope, exhaustion, and everything in between.

The Holidays Don’t Have to Be Perfect

There’s a subtle pressure this time of year to be cheerful, energized, and endlessly giving. But perfection isn’t peaceful. Instead, give yourself permission to create a season that supports your emotional needs, not just expectations from others.

That might mean:

  • choosing simple traditions over elaborate plans,

  • protecting your time and energy,

  • saying no without guilt,

  • or letting some things remain undone.

Calm often shows up when you stop forcing yourself to meet unrealistic standards.

Honor What This Season Brings Up for You

The holidays can stir old memories, highlight grief, or amplify loneliness. They can also bring joy, connection, and small moments of comfort. There is no “right way” to feel during Christmas.

Give yourself space to:

  • breathe through difficult emotions,

The holidays often bring extra gatherings, conversations, and decisions. Boundaries aren’t barriers—they’re safeguards that help you move through the season without losing yourself.

You’re allowed to choose:

  • which invitations you accept,

  • how long you stay,

  • what traditions you keep,

  • what topics are off-limits,

  • and how you care for your emotional well-being.

Boundaries help create the calm you’re longing for.

    Hi! I'm Jennifer. It can be difficult to reach out for help and even harder to find a therapist you are really able to connect with. I'm so glad you are taking a chance! I am passionate about helping clients reach their goals, improve their lives, and overcome hang-ups that keep them from moving forward. I specialize in treating family of origin, grief, trauma, depression disorders, and anxiety disorders. I love working with teens and adults!     I use a client-centered approach to therapy, working with my clients to figure out what kind of treatment works best for them. I use a variety of treatment techniques, such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, Brainspotting, mindfulness, and strengths-based therapy to assist clients in gaining skills that they can use throughout their lives. I provide a safe and non-judgmental space for healing.
    I believe that there is always room to grow and learn, and I work to help my clients leave each session having learned something or having some new insight. I meet clients where they're at and use harm-reduction strategies to help individuals reach their mental health goals.
